Sunil Gavaskar was taken aback as he saw Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Shivam Dube deliver a costly penultimate over of the game, allowing Lucknow Super Giants to clinch a dramatic encounter at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Thursday.

Ravindra Jadeja does seem to be putting the pressure well when CSK set LSG a target of 211 to win before giving over the 19th to the Dube, who hasn’t even bowled a single ball in the entire game.

The outcome was disastrous for CSK, as LSG smashed 25 runs off the over to edge closer to victory. Gavaskar wasn’t pleased with Dube’s repeated delivery of length balls, which permitted Evin Lewis and youngster Ayush Badoni to reap the benefits and ultimately close the match.

Dwayne Bravo delivered the 18th over, and LSG required 34 runs off the last 12 deliveries in the final two overs. Lewis grabbed command and hammered the season’s quickest half-century. With nine runs needed off the final over, Badoni completed the task, giving LSG their first IPL victory.

Shivam Dube definitely hasn’t learned anything: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain, had criticized Dube for bowling hard lengths on a pitch that was supporting the batsmen well.

“He’s bowled those length balls in limited-overs cricket.” He’ll be punished. Of course, it’s hardly fair to throw the 19th over to someone who hasn’t bowled yet when the batsmen are seeking to play strokes.”

“But take a closer look… it’s a length ball. On a twisting, dry pitch, a slower delivery is quite useful. On a pitch where the ball is going off the bat nicely, no,” Sunil Gavaskar stated.

“CSK’s calculations regarding who should bowl are incorrect. On this wonderful batting pitch, a length ball and a nice easy swing are the order of the day.”

“Shivam Dube, he hasn’t learned anything. This time it’s a faster ball with more length, and it’s gone the distance. He was crushed for a boundary after the opening ball went for a six. Then there’s a boundary and the last ball goes for six – 25 runs,”  Sunil Gavaskar remarked as a commentator.

CSK’s hunt for their first win in the IPL 2022 extended as the Super Giants won by six wickets. This was also LSG’s first IPL victory, as the team moved up to sixth place in the standings for the season.
