Mumbai Indians (MI) did a huge favor to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise as they defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) in their final group stage game on Saturday to knock out the latter from contention for a playoff spot.

Everything was on the line for Delhi going into their final game as they needed a win to qualify for the IPL 2022 playoffs in the fourth spot. A loss would mean they bow out with 14 points in their kitty.

Things got off to a terrible start for Rishabh Pant and co. as they were reduced to 31/3 and then to 50/4 courtesy of some excellent bowling from Jasprit Bumrah. Pant and Rovman Powell were left to rebuild the innings.

The duo started off slowly before picking up the pace. There were some lusty blows from Powell and the two put on 75 runs for the 5th wicket. Unfortunately, the platform they laid out couldn’t be capitalized on. The last four overs went for just 34 runs and DC ended with 159 on the board.

The surface offered a lot for the pacers and spinners alike and Delhi bowlers made the most of it. They kept Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan quiet before the former fell for a 13-ball 2.

Kishan carried on and scored a quick-paced 35-ball 48 studded with 3 fours and 4 sixes. Alongside Dewald Brevis, Kishan brought back some momentum to MI’s run chase but it was strangled once again by the DC spinners this time.

The match-winning knock then came from Tim David, who could have been dismissed for a duck if Delhi had reviewed a caught behind. However, he went on to make them pay, smashing an 11-ball 34 which made the run chase a cakewalk for MI.

The loss officially puts Delhi out of IPL 2022 playoff spot and RCB will now go ahead and face off against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator.
