Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin after his brilliance with the bat against Chennai Super Kings on Friday.

Ashwin came to the Royals’ rescue when they needed 48 in 19 balls and had just lost the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer’s wicket.

Ashwin kept RR in the hunt of the 151-run chase as he slog-swept Prashant Solanki for a six over deep mid-wicket.

He brought out the uppercut shot off Matheesha Pathirana and cleared the short third man for a boundary in the 18th over. The Tamil Nadu player smoked Mukesh Choudhary for a six to bring down the equation to seven runs in the final over.

Ashwin sliced Pathirana for a boundary toward the backward point region to provide the finishing touches to the Royals.

Royals won by five wickets against CSK at the Brabourne Stadium to secure a second-place on the points table.

Shastri said Ashwin holds a lot of confidence in his batting and displayed a tremendous shot selection against CSK.

Ashwin is a cricketer who plays with passion. He wants to win every game. It doesn’t matter to him who the opponent is. The kind of confidence he has in his ability, you find that in very few cricketers. I know that he has a lot of confidence in his batting,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

His shot selection under pressure was outstanding. He targeted the right bowlers and pulled out the big strokes when needed. This is how I have seen him bat in the nets. But to take that game into the middle is not easy,” he added.

Earlier in the match, Ashwin trapped CSK opener Devon Conway in front of the stumps to finish 1/28 as RR restricted their opponents at 150/6 despite Moeen Ali’s ferocious batting (93 in 57 balls).

CSK managed just 56 runs in the last 10 overs as Moeen missed his first IPL hundred by seven runs.
