Former Indian pace bowler Rudra Pratap Singh chastised Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant for batting with a lack of responsibility against Punjab Kings on Monday (May 16).

Delhi Capitals outwitted Mayank Agarwal and his men by 17 runs at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai to extend their run in the IPL 2022 playoffs race.

PBKS vs DC: Rishabh Pant dismissed for seven

Capitals posted 159/7 in the first innings on the back of Mitchell Marsh’s vigorous efforts scoring 63 runs in 48 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes.

Pant lasted at the pitch for just three deliveries, he hoicked Liam Livingstone with a one-handed six over long-on.

Pant went to repeat the shot as he charged down the track against the England spinner, however, he missed it and Jitesh Sharma stumped him out with ease.

You expect the captain or the main player to blaze away: RP Singh criticizes Rishabh Pant’s batting approach

RP Singh said there wasn’t any requirement for Pant to go after Livingstone after smashing a six. The former Indian bowler reckoned Pant to have batted throughout the innings as the team leader.

As a captain, it’s your responsibility to stay there and he shouldn’t have fallen into the trap. As spectators, we love it when there’s a battle out there. But the team suffers at the end of it. He had hit a six; hence, another big shot was not needed because if you see he hasn’t done too well in this tournament,” RP Singh told Cricbuzz during the innings break.

“He has always had a penchant for playing explosive knocks but we haven’t seen it here. Today, he had a chance as it was a critical game. You expect the captain or the main player to blaze away and pull us out of trouble. However, he perished and the Capitals managed 159. The team management also has to think about how Pant has to approach his innings,” he added.

Capitals mustered a remarkable comeback in the second innings with Shardul Thakur cruising them with an outstanding spell (4/36). Shardul was complemented by the spin bowlers – Axar Patel (2/14) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/14) in the middle overs.

Capitals will play their final league stage match against Mumbai Indians on Saturday (May 21) in Mumbai.
