Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma praised the fight put up by his team in their 23-run loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 9th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 2, 2022.
Rohit Sharma had the initial advantage as he won the toss and chose to bowl first. For RR, Jos Buttler came to the party, hitting 100 in 67 balls with 5 sixes and 11 fours. Sanju Samson with a quick-fire 30 and Shimron Hetmyer with a quick 35 in 14 balls took the RR team to a good total of 193/8 in 20 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah and Tymal Mills were the best picks of the bowlers from the Mumbai Indians’ side as they picked three wickets each.
Mumbai Indians must have fancied their chances, but RR bowlers did well to pick up Rohit Sharma for 10 and Anmolpreet Singh for 5 runs. Ishan Kishan continued his good run of form scoring 54 with 5 fours and 1 four and added 81 runs for the third wicket with young Tilak Varma, who made 61 in 33 balls with 5 sixes and 3 fours.
But then Kishan fell to Trent Boult and Varma was clean bowled by Ravi Ashwin, bringing an end to MI’s chances. In the end, Pollard made 22 as MI finished on 170/8 and lost the match by 23 runs.
I Thought One Of Those Two Batting Till The End Would’ve Made The Difference: Rohit Sharma On Ishan Kishan And Tilak Varma
Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, both made hard-earned half-centuries and put on 81 runs for the third wicket partnership for MI. However, after they got out, MI lost some quick wickets and Sanju Samson tightened the noose around the chase.
Rohit Sharma said that had Kishan and Varma batted right to the end, they had the momentum to make some difference to the chase.
“I thought they batted well to get to 193. Buttler played an exceptional innings, we tried everything we could to get him out. But I thought 193 on that pitch could’ve been chased, especially when we needed 70 in 7 overs. But these things can happen and its early days. We can learn. (Positives) Few. Bumrah bowling well. Mills as well. And Tilak played exceptionally. And Ishan’s batting was terrific. I thought one of those two batting till the end would’ve made the difference,” Rohit Sharma said after the match.
Rohit also spoke on Suryakumar Yadav’s injury status and said: “(Suryakumar’s fitness) He is a key player for us. Once he gets fit, he comes in straight but we want him to recover since finger injuries are tricky.”
MI will now face KKR on April 6 in Pune, while RR takes on RCB on April 5 in Wankhede.
