IPL 2022 Retention: Virat Kohli Takes A Big Pay Cut As RCB Retain Him

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has retained their talismanic batsman, Virat Kohli, as the first retention ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. He was retained for a contract worth INR 15 crores, 2 crores less than what he earned in the last three years.

Along with Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj were retained and they will earn INR 11 crores and INR 7 crores respectively. The IPL 2022 retention rules state that the number of retentions dictates the type of contract the retained players get.

Kohli might have taken a salary cut in order to accommodate the franchise’s needs to enter the auction with a lot more money. RCB was expected to retain Yuzvendra Chahal as well but the financials couldn’t be worked out. Therefore, only 33 crores out of their 90 cr purse have been deducted, meaning they will enter the auction with 57 crores in their kitty.

Speaking about his retention, Kohli said: “When I was contacted I didn’t have any second thoughts at all. I believe the best is yet to come, I have a good feeling about what’s to come from the next season onwards. Committed as an RCBian, we could not be more thankful. I’ll be there with my heart and soul for RCB as always.”

“It’s the right decision from him” – Parthiv Patel on Virat Kohli’s pay cut

Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel was happy to see Virat Kohli put the team’s needs ahead of himself after the latter took the pay cut. He termed it as the right decision keeping the team’s interest in mind.

“I think he has taken a pay cut in the larger interest of the team. If he had taken Rs 17 crore, those Rs 2 crore would have been cut from their kitty. The larger interest of the team, he has taken that call and it’s the right call as well. We all know how good a player Virat Kohli is. It’s the right decision from him,” Parthiv said on Star Sports.
