Chennai Super Kings are the second-most successful IPL franchise having won four IPL titles. The latest of them was in 2021 beating KKR in the final. Mumbai Indians with five IPL titles remain the most successful franchise in the cash-rich league. MS Dhoni is the only player from its first-ever playing XI to remain actively associated with the side.
The side has won all its four titles under him. They won their first title in 2010, followed it up by defending it in 2011. They won their third title when they returned to the league after serving the two-year ban in 2021. The fourth was the most recent where the veteran skipper played a big role.
Meanwhile, in this article, we take a look at CSK’s first-ever playing XI and where are they now. They played their first game against Kings XI Punjab scoring 240 runs batting first and winning the game by 33 runs.
Chennai Super Kings’ First-Ever Playing XI- Where Are They Now?
Parthiv Patel
Parthiv opened the batting along with Matthew Hayden in the game and scored 15 off 10 balls. He is now retired from international cricket and is associated with Star Sports as a commentator for matches hele in India. One of his achievements in domestic cricket was winning the Ranji Trophy for Gujarat in the 2016-17 season In 2020, he joined Mumbai Indians as a talent scout in the IPL and has continued the association.
Matthew Hayden
The hard-hitting Australian opener played three seasons for CSK. He scored 25 off 17 balls in the first game. He retired from international cricket in 2009 while saying goodbye to IPL in 2010. He scored over 1000 runs for CSK while staying with the franchise for the first three seasons.
Michael Hussey
The southpaw with time went on to become the batting coach of Chennai. Along with that, he has commentary contracts in the BBL, Fox Sports, Channel 7 and. He is currently a part of the commentary team for the ongoing Ashes series down under.
MS Dhoni
Dhoni walked to bat as early as number four in Chennai Super Kings’ first game. He is still the captain of the side and will play another IPL season later this year. There are possibilities that this might be his last year in the IPL with him expressing his desire to retire in front of home fans at the Chepauk. He has played a total of 220 IPL games with more than 200 of them for CSK.

Suresh Raina
Raina last played IPL in 2021 in the UAE leg for Chennai Super Kings . He announced his international retirement on the very same day as MS Dhoni (15 August 2020). Post-retirement, he is enjoying life with his friends and family. With the IPL 2022 auction coming up, Suresh Raina might have his sights set on leading one of the two new franchises.

Jacob Oram
The former Kiwi all-rounder played just 18 IPL games for CSK. Oram played 33 Tests and 160 ODIs for New Zealand during his prime. The all-rounder scored 13 runs off 10 balls for Chennai and even opened the bowling for them. Oram finished with figures of 0/37 after four overs. The Kiwi player played his last IPL season for Mumbai Indians in 2013. He is currently working as the coach of the Manawatu cricket team.
Subramaniam Badrinath
Badrinath the, local boy from Tamil Nadu had a promising start to his IPL career with CSK. Batting at number seven, he played a 14-ball cameo scoring 30 runs and taking the CSK total to 240. After playing the first few seasons with CSK, he was unsold in The IPL 2014 auction.
Joginder Sharma
Sharma was drafted into the CSK side after his heroics in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2007. He was MS Dhoni’s find in many ways and then he played for Chennai. He played four ODI and T20I matches each for India. Joginder Sharma is currently the Deputy Superintendent of Police in his home state of Haryana and played for CSK till 2012.
Manpreet Gony
Gony went for 42 runs off his four overs as Punjab scored 207/4 in their 20 overs. He had the most expensive economy rate in the game along with the other CSK pacer Palani Amarnath. After taking 17 wickets in the 2008 IPL, Gony played two ODIs for India against Hong Kong in June of the same year. He retired from all forms of top-level cricket last year.
Palani Amarnath
He also went for 42 runs off his spell in the game. After that game, he became a forgotten commodity after the game. He was a part of the U-25 Tamil Nadu squad that season. Amarnath played his last competitive match for Madurai SG in TNPL 2017.
Muttiah Muralitharan
The Sri Lanka spin wizard went for 33 runs off his four overs. He retired from international cricket after the 2011 World Cup with most wickets to his name in ODI and Test cricket, a record which is still intact. Currently, he is the spin-bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. This concludes the first ever-playing Xi of Chennai Super Kings that played way back in 2008.
