Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been granted permission to bring in a replacement for the injured all-rounder, Sam Curran. The 23-year-old Englishman sustained a lower back injury that ruled him out of the IPL 2021 season as well as the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

CSK CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved their request for a replacement on Wednesday. The player who will replace Curran is yet to be decided and the decision will be taken soon.

We are going for practice now (on Wednesday evening). We’ll take a call after the nets. We are aware that we don’t have much time to seek the replacement. We will decide soon whom to take as well as whether to take,” Viswanathan said.

There aren’t many all-rounders available at the moment but CSK is reportedly looking into bringing one of the four West Indian bowlers – Fidel Edwards, Dominic Drakes, Ravi Rampaul, and Sheldon Cottrell. Three of these players are already in Dubai as net bowlers by other franchisees. Therefore, it would be feasible to name one of these as the replacement for Curran.

There are time restrictions in place for naming the replacement. A franchise can bring in a player before they play their last league match. CSK has its final game scheduled on October 7 afternoon against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The skipper, MS Dhoni, and head coach, Stephen Fleming, will be consulted before arriving at a final decision.

“I’m sure Sam Curran will emerge stronger from this” – CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan

Wishing the youngster a speedy recovery, Kasi Viswanathan said: “It’s really unfortunate that Curran won’t be available for the rest of the season due to a lower back injury. We wish him a speedy recovery and I’m sure he will emerge stronger from this. BCCI has been informed about the injury.

CSK sits in second place going into their final league match. If they win, they will likely finish in the top two alongside Delhi Capitals. Even if they don’t, they have a favorable net run-rate which could prove to be vital.
