The Punjab franchise has made a change to their name for the upcoming IPL and they will be expecting that the change works as they haven’t won an IPL yet. Punjab have made it to the finals only once in 2014 but lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders despite scoring big in the final.
They had a new captain KL Rahul who has performed brilliantly but hasn’t been able to get the team over the line. The luck never favoured them and lost a lot of close games which they should have easily cruised to victory. Here are 4 stars from Punjab Kings who will have the onus of winning the title.
4 Stars From Punjab Kings(PKBS) Who Will Have The Onus Of Winning The Title:
KL Rahul:
The Punjab captain bagged the orange cap in the previous edition of the IPL and has been in scintillating form in the last few seasons of IPL. He has scored 670 runs in the 14 games he played with the highest score of 132 in the season. He will continue as the captain of the Punjab franchise for the upcoming edition.
There have been a lot of questions raised on him about his strike rate going in the downward direction in IPL, and the weak middle order has been the main reason for it. However, this IPL will be much different and he will look to dominate proceedings from the ball one. He has some staggering numbers in T20 cricket and is one of the best T20 players going around.
Chris Gayle:
Chris Gayle is still playing for the West Indies T20 side and he is expected to feature in the T20 WorldCup this year. The veteran is one of the stalwarts of the T20 format and has demolished any good bowling attack. He holds most of the records in the format including the highest individual score of 175 not out in 2013 IPL against Pune Warriors.
Gayle has been one of the consistent performers in the IPL over the years having played 132 IPL games and has scored 4772 runs at an average of 41.1. He had an immediate impact after coming into the team last year and Punjab understood the importance of having him on the team. He will face stiff competition from David Malan for the number three position.
Nicholas Pooran:
Nicholas Pooran has been one of the rising stars in world cricket right now and is a dangerous batsman with his tremendous power hitting. He can take the game away from the opponents in a very quick time and plays an important role for the franchise coming in at four.
The West Indian left-hander is an excellent fielder too and can be the backup wicketkeeper too as KL Rahul has taken the gloves behind the wickets. Pooran played 14 games in the last IPL and scored 353 runs. He would have to play the finisher role for the team most of the time with not much batting to come after him.
Mohammed Shami:
Mohammed Shami has been one of the best fast bowlers produced from India and has been a brilliant exponent of seam bowling. He has good numbers in ODI internationals and has slowly become far more effective in IPL with his yorkers at the death and with the swinging new ball.
Shami has been associated with a lot of fitness concerns but has worked on it and played the last season completely picking up 20 wickets in the 14 games he played. He will lead the bowling attack and his four overs will be crucial to Punjab’s success in the upcoming IPL.
