Mumbai Indians will start their IPL 2021 journey with the first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. It is the first match of the tournament and will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Mumbai Indians are the defending champions of the tournament. The Rohit Sharma-led team won their 5th IPL trophy last year in IPL 2020.
Ahead of IPL 2021 auction, Mumbai Indians released 7 players from their squad who were Prince Balwant Rai, Digvijay Deshmukh, Lasith Malinga, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson, Sherfane Rutherford, and Mitchell McCleneghan. The franchise re-inducted Nathan Coulter-Nile in the squad during IPL 2021 auction after buying the Australian pacer for Rs. 5 crore.

Indian spinner Piyush Chawla was bought for Rs. 2.4 crore by Mumbai Indians during IPL 2021 auction. Chawla is the 3rd highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League with 160 wickets in 150 games. Chawla is an experienced spin bowler in IPL.
The right-arm spinner Chawla played for Punjab Kings from IPL 2008 to IPL 2013. From IPL 2014 to 2019, he was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders. In IPL 2020, he played was Chennai Super Kings but was released by the franchisee ahead of IPL 2020 auction. Chawla will start his new journey with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021.
