IPL 2021: 5 Players Who Can Win The Purple Cap This Year

IPL 2021, which is expected to commence in April 2021, is a highly awaited cricket tournament for Indian cricket fans. The eight teams namely Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings will once again compete against each other to lift the crown in IPL 2021.

The tournament will bring some nail-biting matches for the cricket fans, just like it did during the previous edition.

Along with the race to lift the trophy, players will also compete to win the orange cap and purple cap. The leading wicket-taker in the tournament is awarded the purple cap. Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have won the purple cap two times- the most by any cricketer in the IPL tournament’s history.

This time, with India being the venue, the conditions are expected to favour the spin bowlers more. Here we look at five players who can win the purple cap in IPL 2021.

Kagiso Rabada has been a consistent performer with the ball in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League. In IPL 2019, he was the second-leading wicket-taker after Imran Tahir with 25 wickets. In IPL 2020, he levelled-up his performance to become the top wicket-taker after scalping 30 wickets in 17 games and won the purple cap.

Kagiso Rabada is the leading player responsible for handling Delhi Capitals’ bowling department. In IPL 2021, he is one of the top candidates to win the purple cap.

Jasprit Bumrah

Since IPL 2016, Jasprit Bumrah has been among the top 10 leading wicket-takers in every season. Last season in IPL 2020, Jasprit Bumrah was the second most wicket-taker with 27 wickets in 15 games. Bumrah has improved his bowling over the years and now he is one of the most dangerous bowlers in IPL as well as international cricket.

He is yet to win a purple cap and IPL 2021 might become the season for him. The right-arm bowler is among the top contenders to bag the purple cap in IPL 2021.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin has attracted a lot of applauds for him post-IPL 2020. During India vs Australia Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21, Ashwin starred with his bowling performance. Also, in the ongoing India vs England Test series 2021, the right-arm spinner has been phenomenal with his bowling.

Indian conditions favour the spin bowlers more and since IPL 2021 is going to be held in India, Ravichandran Ashwin is also among the top contenders to win the purple cap.

Since his IPL debut in 2017, Rashid Khan has been a consistent performer in the tournament. He scalped 17 wickets in IPL 2017, 21 wickets in IPL 2018, 17 wickets in IPL 2019, and 20 wickets in IPL 2020.

Along with his incredible economy of 6.24 in IPL, he has been among the top performers in every season. Performing on Indian soil in IPL 2021, the Afghanistan spinner is among the top bowlers who can win the purple cap.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal has been a gemstone for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The franchise has retained the Indian spinner over the years as he carries out a lot of hard work for the team. In IPL 2020, Yuzvendra Chahal was the 5th most wicket-taker with 21 wickets in 15 games. Among spinners, he was the topmost wicket-taker.

In IPL 2021, Indian conditions will give more assistance to the leg spinner and he might turn out to be the bowler with the most wickets in IPL 2021. Hence, Chahal is among the leading contenders for the purple cap award.
