Former English captain Nasser Hussain has reacted the same as most to David Warner’s ousting as SunRisers Hyderabad skipper for the remainder of IPL 2021. While David Warner might not have captained Australia full-time, he has shown his captaincy credentials for the SunRisers Hyderabad, leading them to the summit in 2016 and lifting them to the playoffs on most occasions. Nasser Hussain believes that removing him as the leader is a massive decision.

David Warner is one of the most prolific openers in IPL history; however, his form has not been the same this year. The left-handed batsman has had a strike rate of 110 (compared to his career strike rate of 140), while his 55-ball 57 against the Chennai Super Kings batting first in a losing effort copped plenty of criticism. With 5447 runs in IPL, Warner is only one of the six men to score more than 5000 runs. He also has four centuries to go with.

Nasser Hussain hopes that installing Kane Williamson at the top affects them positively since it feels like a reboot for a team sitting at the bottom of the table. The cricketer-turned-commentator referred to David Warner as Mr. SunRisers and credited him for the franchise’s success over the years by faring exceptionally well at the top.

Hopefully, it impacts them in a positive way. That’s why they have made this choice. It’s almost like a team that needs a reboot sitting at the bottom of the table. It is a big decision because he is Mr. Sunrisers. He has been a huge reason why SRH have had so much success over the years. He’s led them to glory and he’s played well at the top of the order,” Hussain stated as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Nasser Hussain also acknowledged that David Warner is out of form and by Warner’s admission, his slow half-century cost the Orange Army the game against Chennai. Nevertheless, the Chennai-born former cricketer thinks it’s a substantial move to go from one overseas skipper to another.

“He is out of form this season. He may be the second highest run-getter but batting at the top with a strike rate of 110, he himself admitted in that last game that he cost them the game. But make no mistake, this is a massive move to change from one overseas captain to another doesn’t really change a lot,” he added.
