Former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar opines that the Chennai Super Kings skipper, MS Dhoni is starting to gain his rhythm back. His comments came after Dhoni played a cameo of 17 runs from 8 balls on Wednesday against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai.

MS Dhoni was coming on the back of a 2-ball duck against Delhi Capitals and a scratchy 17-ball 18 runs innings versus Rajasthan Royals, which earned him plenty of flak from the experts.

Also, the 39-year-old hasn’t played any professional level cricket between the start of IPL 2021 and the end of the season last year – he opted out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, while his teammates, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu played in the domestic tournament.

Sunil Gavaskar reckons the CSK skipper was right in promoting himself to number 4 from number 7 which gives him a little bit of time to settle and then attack. Dhoni hit 2 fours and a six in his short knock, and the former India opener predicts that the fans will be treated to more suck sixes in the tournament.

“It is (special). The whole of India loves watching him bat. He has got something special. The more he gets to bat, the better he is going to be as the tournament progresses.

“And we will probably see a lot more sixes and boundaries coming off his bat the more we saw him bat at No. 4 or No. 5,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

The 71-year-old asserted that Dhoni’s promotion over the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, and even Suresh Raina, who was slotted to bat at 4, ensured that the momentum which the top 3 had created didn’t dip and CSK not only crossed the 200-run mark but also finished on 220.

“He sussed up the situation very well. He realised that more than Rayudu, Raina or Jadeja, he was needed to keep the momentum going. That’s what he did with that little cameo of an innings. He made sure CSK didn’t take their foot off the accelerator,” the former opener elucidated.

With 3 wins on a trot, after losing the first match, the Yellow Army sits at the top of the points table. They will next meet Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday afternoon.
