Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, on Saturday, hit his maiden IPL hundred versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Abu Dhabi. He reached his landmark with a gigantic 108m six on the last ball of CSK’s innings.
There was, however, plenty of drama in the last over, bowled by Mustafizur Rahman. Ravindra Jadeja smashed the pacer for two fours and a six on the first three balls before taking a single on the last, giving Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was on 95, a couple of deliveries to complete his ton.
The right-hander missed the fifth ball. but cashed in on the last ball of the over. He shuffled across to access the leg side, and thumped a length ball from Mustafizur for a maximum over deep mid-wicket.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, generally a calm and composed cricketer known for his cool temperament, let out some of his emotions with a roar in celebration of his maiden IPL century.

After being inserted in to bat first, Ruturaj Gaikwad started his innings with a beautiful straight drive off Akash Singh. CSK were 25/0 after four over, before Faf du Plessis struck two fours off Chetan Sakariya in the fifth, and Gaikwad thumped CSK’s first six to Mustafizur Rahman to cap off the powerplay at 44/0.
Faf du Plessis then got out to Rahul Tewatia in the seventh over, stumped by Samson while trying to accelerate. Tewatia struck again with Suresh Raina’s wicket. The run rate for CSK dipped as they reached 63/2 at the 10-over mark.
Gaikwad and Moeen Ali then took the attack to leg-spinners Tewatia and Mayank Markande lofting them for fours and sixes. The right-hander raised his fifty in the 14th over, but the left-hander got stumped, in the 15th, giving Tewatia his third wicket of the night.
The CSK opener continued to hammer runs off some indisciplined bowling by RR bowlers. At the other end, Sakariya accounted for Ambati Rayudu’s wicket.
Gaikwad hit 4,4,6 in the 16th over to Akash Singh to reach 80; he harrumphed Mustafizur for a gigantic six over mid-wicket in the 18th to enter the 90s. Ravindra Jadeja went beserk in the last over against Mustafizur: 4,6,wd,4 giving a single to Gaikwad on the fourth ball.
Gaikwad, on 95, missed the fifth ball, but walloped a maximum on the last ball to bring up his maiden IPL century as CSK finished with a mammoth total of 189.
