Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad played an AB De Villiers-esque sweep shot off Mumbai Indians’ premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah for a huge six during the first game of the second leg of the IPL 2021.
Gaikwad took over the responsibility of guiding the innings after CSK lost wickets in a cluster. He was itchy at the beginning but picked up the pace with Ravindra Jadeja at the other end. Once Gaikwad felt comfortable at the crease, he unleashed a flurry of shots.
One of them was a brilliant shot to finish off the innings off Bumrah. Having already hit a conventional lofted cover drive earlier in the over, Gaikwad went for an audacious sweep. Bumrah was aiming for a yorker but missed his mark by a little and it ended up as a full toss.
Gaikwad took full toll of it and smoked it over deep backward square leg region to finish off the innings in style with a 76-m six. He ended up unbeaten on 88 off just 58 balls, which included nine fours and four sixes.

After MS Dhoni opted to bat first, his decision wasn’t justified by the top-order batsmen. Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, and Dhoni were all dismissed within the first six overs. Ambati Rayudu was also hit on the elbow and forced to retire hurt.
A partnership ensued between Gaikwad and Jadeja which took CSK close to the 100-run mark. After the latter was dismissed, Dwayne Bravo played a brilliant cameo of 23 off 8 balls which then pushed the score past the 150-run mark, before finally ending on 156/6. Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each for the MI side.
