Ricky Ponting, the Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach, said he has been transparent to Marcus Stoinis about the all-rounder’s role in his team.

The burly all-rounder joined the Capitals last year and made a significant impact on the side’s success last season as Delhi reached their maiden IPL final. Last season, he scored 352 runs, at an average of 25.14 while striking at 148.52, along with 13 wickets.

This year, in the truncated IPL 2021, although his batting stints have been short-lived, his strike rate of 144.90 is telling.

Although he has been a phenomenal batsman at Melbourne Stars at the top of the order, Ricky Ponting had deployed him in the middle-order in the IPL while Stoinis still searches for a fixed role in the Australian side.

“With Australia, he’s been in and out of the side, and not really found a spot in the batting line-up. I’ve tried to make it pretty clear to him where I see him slotting in with the Delhi Capitals outfit and the role he’s going to play for us,” Ricky Ponting said while speaking to

It’s fair to say he does enjoy working under the way that I coach: Ricky Ponting

The legendary World Cup-winning captain reckons Stoinis enjoys playing and learning under his coaching – as indicated by their success at the Capitals.

Ricky Ponting further praises the Western Australian all-rounder for the efforts he puts into his skills and training.

“He is a hard worker. He likes to bat and bowl as much as anyone we’ve had at Delhi. So as long as I give some clear direction and he understands what he’s doing and what his role is, I just let him go about getting himself prepared. I’ll only interfere with players’ preparation if I think they’re bludging and they’re not doing the right thing. It’s fair to say he does enjoy working under the way that I coach,” the Delhi coach stated.

The Capitals sit atop of the IPL 2021 points table with 6 wins and 2 losses. They have been boosted by the return of Shreyas Iyer, however, it hasn’t been yet made clear whether Iyer will take over the captaincy from Pant, or the wicketkeeper will resume as the skipper of the side.
