An official of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has confirmed that the retention cards will be available in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, and the first one will be used to keep legendary skipper, MS Dhoni.

CSK won the IPL 2021 title under Dhoni on Friday. During the post-match presentation ceremony, he cheekily stated that he isn’t playing for Chennai yet. Fans speculated whether he can be retained ahead of the next season, and an official from CSK has confirmed that he is their primary choice.

There will be retention and that is a fact. The number of retentions isn’t something we are aware of yet. But honestly, that is secondary in MS’ case because the first card will be used for him. The ship needs its captain and rest assured he will be back next year,” the official was quoted as saying to ANI.

Every final is special – MS Dhoni, after guiding CSK to their fourth IPL title

On Friday, Chennai once again proved why they are one of the best franchises in the world as they secured their fourth IPL title by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs. After the disastrous 2020 season where they failed to make the playoffs for the first time, it was quite a refreshing comeback from the Yellow Brigade. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhoni said:

Every final is special. If you look at stats, we may say we’re the most consistent team to lose the final too. I feel it’s important to come back strong, especially in the knockouts.”

I would love to thank the fans, wherever we’ve played, even when we were in South Africa, we’ve always had a good number of CSK fans. That is what you crave. Thanks to all of them, it feels like we’re playing in Chennai. Hopefully, we’ll be back in Chennai for the fans,” Dhoni said.

The IPL 2022 season will see the addition of two new teams, and a mega auction will take place. Each franchise is expected to undergo a major rejig, and it will be interesting to see the players that they decide to retain.
