The IPL 2023 Auction will be held in Kochi on December 23 after BCCI completed the retentions earlier this month. The board asked the players to submit the list of players they want to retain by November 15 ahead of the mega auction. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained 18 players and released 8 players.
Chennai Super Kings have won the title twice in the last four seasons in 2018 and 2021. In the 2022 edition, they finished ninth on the points table winning just four games and losing 10. Mumbai Indians who finished last also won as many games.
CSK have done well to retain the core of the side. MS Dhoni will be leading the side and possibly playing his last IPL at the age of 39. Ravindra Jadeja after much deliberation has been retained by the franchise. The management is expected to announce MS Dhoni’s successor by the end of the season.
In this article, we take a look at three retained players by CSK who would have gone unsold in IPL 2023 auction if they would have been released.
IPL 2023 Auction: 3 Players Retained By Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Who Would Have Gone Unsold In The Auction
Prashant Solanki
Solanki made his List A debut on 25 February 2021, for Mumbai in the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his Twenty20 debut on 9 November 2021, for Mumbai in the 2021–22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In February 2022 he was picked up by CSK in the mega auction.
Solanki was roped in for 1.20 crores. He played two games for his franchise picking up just two wickets. Solanki has taken 21 wickets in 9 List A matches so far in his career. With all the franchises having at least good Indian spinner in their ranks, the youngster would have found it difficult to find a franchise.

Simarjeet Singh
Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh was roped in by Chennai Super Kings for 20 lakhs ahead of the mega auction last year. He played six matches last season picking up four wickets. Singh made his IPL debut against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune. He went wicketless in his first two outings and ultimately ended the season with four wickets. His overall inexperience having not played the game at the highest level consistently might have made it difficult for him.
Aging 24 currently, he has picked up 37 First Class wickets, 23 List A wickets, and 23 T20 wickets in his career so far after his debut in 2018.
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Given his recent run of form, Ruturaj Gaikwad might have found it tough to get a franchise in IPL 2023 auction if he would have been released by CSK. He was first picked by CSK in IPL 2020 for 20 lakhs. His big break came in IPL 2021 where he scored 635 runs in 16 games including a century and four fifties. He was retained by the franchise for 6 crores ahead of the mega auction.
His heroics with the bat in IPL 2021 helped him make his India debut against Sri Lanka. In seven T20Is this year, he has scored just 100 runs averaging under 20. His T20I scores so far this year are 4, 23, 1, 57, 5, and 10. He was benched from the ODI series after his poor scores in the T20I series.
