Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting was visibly frustrated during the ninth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Ricky Ponting was engaged in an animated discussion with the umpires over Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson’s decision.

The controversy arose when Nandre Burger substituted West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer as the impact fielder, followed by Rovman Powell entering the game for Riyan Parag. Sanju Samson summoned Powell onto the field after the second ball of the first over.

Observing the unfolding events from the dugout, Ricky Ponting expressed his concerns and engaged in an animated chat with an off-field match official. Ricky Ponting questioned the presence of four overseas players on the field, with they named just three in the XI.

Papers were brought out as the official attempted to clarify the rules to Ponting while explaining the situation to the DC head coach. As Ponting remained patient in the dugout, director Ganguly, seated behind him, intervened and added his input to the conversation.

RULE 1.2.5: Each team may not name more than 4 Overseas players (as defined in the IPL Player Regulations) in its starting eleven for any match.

RULE 1.2.6: “A team may not have more than 4 Overseas players on the field of play at any time during any match. Thus, if the team names a maximum of 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, an Overseas player may only take the field as a substitute fielder if the player that he is replacing is an Overseas player. If the team names less than 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, Overseas players may only enter the field of play as substitute fielders to the extent that by doing so, they do not take the total number of overseas players representing that team on the field to more than 4.”

RR initially included three players, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and Trent Boult, in the starting lineup. During the second innings, Nandre Burger entered as the Impact sub, while Rovman Powell replaced a substitute fielder. As Hetmyer was not fielded during the second innings, the total count of overseas players from RR on the pitch remained at four.

Young all-rounder Riyan Parag delivered a standout performance, scoring an unbeaten 84 off 45 balls, featuring seven fours and six sixes. Parag helped the Jaipur-based franchise recover from a challenging start to set a formidable total of 185 for 5 in 20 overs.

Mitchell Marsh and David Warner provided a strong start for the Capitals. Warner scored 49 off 34 balls, featuring five fours and three sixes, while Marsh added 23 off 12 balls. However, the rest of the team couldn’t sustain the momentum as they fell short of the target.

Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal each secured two wickets, with Avesh Khan also delivering a commendable performance, taking one wicket.

The Rishabh Pant-led team will take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their next match at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 31.
