The veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, made a shocking revelation about the Indian cricket team’s ICC trophy drought. Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the team’s trend of reaching finals and semi-finals without clinching victories in the final matches.
The Men in Blue haven’t secured an ICC tournament victory since the 2013 Champions Trophy. They reached the finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. The heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final extended their title drought.
Have Been On A Drought To Win ICC Trophies – Ravichandran Ashwin
In a video on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin acknowledged India’s drought of the ICC trophy. He emphasized their consistent eliminations in the semi-finals or finals. He noted that the T20 World Cup will commence a few days after the IPL final.
“We have been on a drought to win ICC trophies for years now and have consistently been knocked out in the semis or finals. And this is yet another year where the ICC T20 World Cup follows the IPL final by just five days,” said Ashwin before his preview show on the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
The Rohit Sharma-led team was considered one of the title contenders before the start of the 2023 World Cup at home. Team India demonstrated dominance throughout the league stage, remaining unbeaten until the playoffs in the recent marquee tournament.
The Men in Blue defeated New Zealand in the semifinal encounter to secure a berth in the final match. However, they failed to continue their winning momentum in the title clash. They were unable to end their ICC trophy drought despite their 10-match winning streak.
The IPL 2024 season sparks concerns about its impact on the Indian cricket team’s readiness for the T20 World Cup. There are worries that the rigorous IPL schedule might exhaust key Indian players mentally, potentially affecting their performance in the World Cup.
The demanding IPL schedule, along with frequent travel and consecutive matches, poses a significant challenge for players. The pressure to excel for their franchises adds to the mental strain they endure. This situation raises worries that important Indian players might face mental exhaustion by the onset of the World Cup.
