Prithvi Shaw failed to make the cut for Delhi Capitals’ playing eleven for their IPL 2024 opener against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on Saturday (March 23).

The match marks the return of DC captain Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who missed the entire season last year, is playing his first competitive game since December last year. Apart from having their captain back, DC also have a new opening combination for their opening game of IPL 2024.

In the last edition of the IPL, David Warner opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw as well as Phil Salt. However, the Delhi-based outfit has now decided to promote Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh as Warner’s new opening partner. Marsh has been opening the innings for Australia in T20Is and DC will be hoping that the in-form allrounder delivers for them at the top of the order.

No Prithvi Shaw in playing eleven:

Prithvi Shaw could not find a spot in the playing eleven after failing to do well in the IPL last year. The right-handed batsman struggled throughout the competition and was also dropped from the playing eleven midway through the season. In eight games last year, the Mumbai star managed to score only a modest 106 runs and 54 of those runs came in a single game.

Recently, he failed to impress in the Ranji Trophy as well. In nine innings, he managed one century and one half-century for Mumbai. Although Prithvi Shaw has not really done well in recent times, his exclusion from DC’s playing eleven has raised a number of eyebrows.

Here are some of the reactions:
