Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reckoned that Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma being rested might be a concern in the first test in South Africa as they will lack game time. Virat Kohli has been rested for the T20I series against New Zealand at home while Rohit will be the new permanent captain. However, for the test series against New Zealand, there have been some interesting changes.
Virat Kohli is rested for the first test and will join by the second test while the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, and Shardul Thakur are all rested for the entire two tests. With India keen to win a test series in South Africa, this might not be the best option especially for Rishabh Pant who hasn’t had big scores under his belt in recent times.
“The Batters Need Some Time In The Middle” – Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra was worried about resting Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma who are certainties in the playing XI for the first test in South Africa and feared if they would have ideal preparations. He added both the batters could possibly miss out on the much-needed crease time.
“If Rohit is not playing even one Test match, Rishabh Pant is also not playing and they are going to be surely a part of our XI in the first Test against South Africa, I am a little worried.”
I am just wondering, is it not a preparation for South Africa? Why am I saying the second match is important? You don’t play the first, you can take a break in between because when you go to South Africa and there is no game time in between, it is going to be tough. The batters need some time in the middle, they should be used to scoring runs on the pitch.” Aakash Chopra told on his Youtube Channel
Aakash Chopra Explains Pant’s Struggles Recently
Aakash Chopra mentioned Rishabh Pant having a poor series in England and he did not look great in IPL or the T20 World cup. He added that Pant should have opted to play at least one test ahead of the South Africa tour in mind.
“I am thinking that the series that Pant had in England, that wasn’t a great series for him. He did not score too many runs. IPL was also okay okay, World Cup was also okay okay. He will play the T20s here but will not play even one Test.” He added
India will play a two-match test series against New Zealand and then will travel to South Africa for a complete series in all formats.
