IND vs NZ 2021: He Didn't Seek My Council, I Imposed Myself On Him – Sunil Gavaskar On The Advice He Gave To Mayank Agarwal

Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he gave some tips to help the Indian opening batsman Mayank Agarwal ahead of the Mumbai Test against New Zealand.
Mayank Agarwal was the star performer of the Indian team on Day 1 of the second Test match against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He managed to smash incredible 120* runs despite not getting much support from the other hand.

Indian batting legend Gavaskar said that he and Mayank stay in the same hotel and he gave some batting advice to Mayank. Also, Gavaskar added that he feels that the Indian opening batsman is imposing his tips in the batting. He said:
“Let me clarify. He didn’t seek my council, I imposed myself on him. Look, I care for Indian cricket. He was walking past and he was staying in the same hotel so I told him maybe you should try something.”
“I don’t know whether he is trying it. It looks like he is. But look, at the end of the day, it’s about how strong you are mentally and he has shown he is very strong mentally,” Gavaskar revealed during his commentary stint.

Gavaskar further lauded 30-year-old Mayank for his discipline and mentioned that everyone can’t be Virender Sehwag who can provide an aggressive start to the team so discipline is important. He said:
“The discipline he has shown at the beginning of a five-day game – not everybody can be a Virender Sehwag, who can get away to a flying start but at the start of the innings, the discipline around the off-stump is so important.”
Gavaskar added that Mayank took the calculated risk against the Kiwi spinners and he executed his shots brilliantly. He asserted:
“Not looking to play across the line and then get out LBW to an incoming delivery. So that is what he has shown. He played straight and later on when the spinners came in, he took calculated risks going inside out. Brilliantly executed shots.”
