Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has opined that India shouldn’t drop Shreyas Iyer from the playing XI in the second Test against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, and they should retain him in the playing XI.

Shreyas Iyer has played sensational knocks in his Test debut against New Zealand, in the first innings, he came out to bat when India were struggling at 145/4, and he added an unbeaten 113-run stand with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and smashed brilliant 105 runs.

Meanwhile, in the second innings, he once again came out to bat in a challenging situation and scored amazing 65 runs. Also, he has become the first-ever Indian cricketer to smash a century, and a half-century in the Test debut match and Iyer is the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to smash 50+ scores in both the innings of the debut match.

After looking at Iyer’s performance in the Test match, Wasim Jaffer took to Twitter to state that he should be retained for the next game. He wrote:

Iyer, while talking about his marvellous debut century, said that he can’t explain his feelings. He said:

“I was in a good frame of mind. To get this opportunity and to score a hundred in my debut Test is a different feeling. I can’t explain it. So many messages to me saying this is your best achievement in your life. It took me back to my Mumbai cricketing days.”

The 26-year-old also thanked his father and mother, and all the family members to support him in his remarkable journey. He asserted:

My dad obviously loves Test cricket the most. To give him this gift of century would be the best achievement for me. It is a great feeling for both of us. My mom and dad have been really supportive throughout my journey, and they have been the pillars of my success so far and will always be. I would like to thank them and my whole family who have been supportive throughout.”

The second Test between India and New Zealand will begin on December 3 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Virat Kohli will be making a comeback in the team.

So to make place for the original captain, India will have to drop a middle-order batter, and after scoring a century, it’s highly unlikely that Iyer will get dropped. However, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane who showed poor form in the match, might get dropped.
