India vs New Zealand, 2021: 3rd T20I, Kolkata – Toss Report

The third and final T20I between India and New Zealand will be played at the beautiful Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. The series has been secured by India following a comfortable 7-wicket victory in the second T20I in Ranchi.

The toss once again played a factor as Rohit Sharma opted to chase at the dew-filled JSCA in Ranchi. Following a brisk start from the Kiwis, the spin duo of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin pulled things back to ensure India won’t be chasing much.

Harshal Patel did what he does best – pick wickets at regular intervals and maintain a healthy economy throughout. He won the Man of the Match award on his but with figures of 2/25. New Zealand’s target of 154 was then easily chased courtesy of a 117-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.

For the Black Caps, the batting powerplay was explosive but their inexperience showed as none of the batsmen failed to stick around to make a significant contribution. The top five chipped in with cameos but if they are to get a consolation victory in Kolkata, somebody needs to put their hand up and play till the end.

As for the bowling, it was once again toothless as they failed to trouble the Indian openers, who ran away with the game. The fatigue from the T20 World Cup is evident for everyone to see but they don’t have many options since they came to the subcontinent with a small squad.

In the context of the series, the result will not matter but both teams will continue building on their quest to win the 2022 T20 World Cup.
