New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is most likely to miss the two months of cricket due to the elbow injury he suffered during the India Test series which ruled him out of the second Test at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson will not play the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh and might also miss the white-ball tour of Australia which will begin on January 30. However, he is expected to make a comeback in the home test series against South Africa which will commence on February 17.

Talking about Williamson, the Black Caps head coach Gary Stead said that he expects Kane to be out of action for eight or nine weeks. He elaborated :

“We’re trying not to put timeframes on it at this stage, I think we’ve looked to do that in the past and games have probably come a little bit quicker than what we’ve wanted. Last time, if you look after the World Test Championship and then coming back before the IPL and the Twenty20 World Cup, it was about eight or nine weeks, so I expect somewhere in that timeframe again.”

The Management Of Kane Williamson Through The T20 Games Was Much Easier – Gary Stead

The New Zealand head coach Stead said that the management of Williamson in the T20 cricket is much easier and on Tests it becomes troublesome. He said:

The management of Kane through the T20 games was much easier because it’s about load on the elbow, so as soon as you enter the test arena and you’re looking at longer periods of time training and then batting as well, that load is what tipped him over the edge. In the shorter forms of the game it’s more manageable, in test cricket it’s tougher.”

Meanwhile, due to the elbow problems, Williamson often reduces the training workload and play the games with minimal training. Gary Stead further added:

“That’s been a change of mindset to get his head around, but he’s adapted really well to that, There have been some time during tournaments where we’ve had to talk about it, get him to pull back a little bit from what he naturally wants to do. He’s a prodigious trainer, he loves hitting balls, he loves being and feeling fully prepared for the matches.”

Stead also said that Kane absolutely hates missing cricket whether it is Test cricket or any other format. He said:

“Kane’s doing it tough – he loves playing for New Zealand, he hates the thought of missing any cricket, let alone test cricket.”
