All-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was selected in the Indian squad for the upcoming 3-match T20I series against New Zealand on the back of splendid performances in the second leg of the IPL 2021 season.

His maiden call-up also comes on the back of good domestic performances for Madhya Pradesh. Add to the fact that he’s a genuine batsman who can bowl whenever the captain requires him to. As a result, his stocks go through the roof. Ahead of the series against the Kiwis, Iyer revealed his ambitions on bcci.tv.

I have been playing domestic cricket for quite some time, and the way that my team has progressed is a result of what I’m getting. It is one thing to play for the country, but the dream is not just to play there but to make the country win and win tournaments for the country.

“I haven’t set any individual goals. One thing I expect is India winning, and I really hope to enjoy each and every moment of this series,” Iyer said.

“I felt happier for him than for myself” – Avesh Khan on Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer’s Madhya Pradesh teammate and friend, Avesh Khan, was the one who happened to tell Iyer about his selection for the series. It’s the first time that the duo has been given a chance to be in the Indian dressing room and Avesh mentioned that he felt great happiness for his teammate.

Personally, I felt happier for him than for myself. I have seen him grow, not only as a cricketer but also as a person. We are neighbours, and we both play for the same association and share a good bond, being room partners for half a decade.

“I have seen the struggles he has gone through. I am happy for him, and I’m sure that he is, even more, happier for me,” Avesh was quoted as saying.

Both Avesh and Iyer had great IPL 2021 seasons following which, they were brought into the national team. The T20I series against New Zealand begins on November 17.
