Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, believes that Ishan Kishan would be dissatisfied with his performance in the white-ball matches versus Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Jaffer believes that the southpaw has to improve both his consistency and his ability to play against spin.

In the limited-overs matches, Team India defeated both New Zealand and Sri Lanka, although Kishan failed to score a single half-century in nine innings. At the beginning of last month, the 24-year-old hit 37 against Sri Lanka in the first T20I. He hasn’t even surpassed the 20-run threshold since then in any of his trips to the pitch.

Ishan Kishan Needs To Play Spin Better: Wasim Jaffer

All three ODIs and T20Is against the Kiwis saw Ishan Kishan play, but he was unable to provide the goods. He was lbw for one on February 1 in Ahmedabad during the decisive T20I match against New Zealand. Michael Bracewell nabbed him. When discussing Kishan’s problems on ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer provided the following analysis:

“Ishan Kishan would be a little disappointed with his performances. His inconsistency and his ability to play spin, he needs to step up in that department. Otherwise, all the guys who played in this series, there were lots of positives coming out of the Indian team and players.”

Kishan has fallen short of expectations in the T20I format despite making a strong start in the format in March 2021. He has 653 runs at an average of 25.11 with a strike rate of 122.74 in 27 games.

Rahul Tripathi Wants To Play For The Team: Wasim Jaffer

Rahul Tripathi was under pressure going into the decisive match against the Kiwis in Ahmedabad, much like Kishan. He entered the game, though, and played a lightning-quick innings, scoring 44 in just 22 balls. India gained momentum thanks to the innings after Kishan was dismissed early.

Jaffer complimented Tripathi much while praising his performance, saying:

“For somebody playing in only his 4th or 5th T20I game, it feels really nice that he has got that selfless approach. He wants to play for the team and he got the Indian innings going with his approach. (Shubman) Gill took over; everybody had little cameos. But Tripathi has to be given a lot of credit.

“The acceleration was set up by Tripathi. His cameo off 44 in 20-odd balls started things for India. The way he took the bowlers on with his powerplay onslaught, it was great to see.”

After Kishan was out in the second over, Gill and Tripathi quickly put up a second-wicket partnership score of 80 runs. After reaching 234/4, the Men in Blue bowled out New Zealand in 12.1 overs for just 66 runs.
