IND vs NZ: Most Grounds Hosting Men's ODI In A Country

The second IND vs NZ ODI was played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on January 21, 2023. The stadium became the 50th ODI venue for men’s cricket in India. In the process, India also became the first country in the world to have 50 cricket grounds. 

In a clinical performance, the Indian bowlers bowled out the Kiwis for just 109. Mohammed Shami took three wickets and started the slide in the Kiwi batting lineup. Hardik Pandya and Washington Sundar took two each while Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur took one each.

Rohit Sharma scored 51 off 50 balls to lead the charge for India. Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 40 to take India home and complete the series win. The third ODI will be played on January 24 in Indore.

Both sides have played 115 ODIs between themselves with India winning 57 games and the Kiwis winning 50. Bilateral series between both teams have been always closely contested and the ongoing series is also expected to be the same.

After the ODI series, both teams then play a three-match T20I series. The T20Is will be played in Ranchi (January 27), Lucknow (January 29), and Ahmedabad (February 1) respectively.

1) India -50

As said earlier, India leads the list with 50 venues that have hosted a men’s ODI. The capacity crowd at the  Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium is almost 62000 which is the third-highest after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The stadium was packed as it witnessed an easy Indian win. Venues that often host men’s ODI cricket in India are Bangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Indore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai amongst others.

2) England – 22

England is the next country with the most venues where international men’s ODI is played. The country has seen 22 grounds hosting men’s ODI cricket. Lord’s, The Oval, Southampton, Trent Bridge, and Manchester are venues that host regular men’s cricket in England. Lord’s for instance will host the 2023 WTC final. 

3) Australia – 19

Australia sits third on this list. The country has had 19 grounds where men’s ODI cricket has been played. The country hosted the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 and will host the next Ashes series. Melbourne is the venue with the most capacity crowd touching nearly 10000 packed capacity. Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and  Perth hosts international cricket regularly in Australia.

4) New Zealand- 16

Australia’s trans-Tasmanian neighbour has 16 venues that have hosted men’s ODI in the country. New Zealand were the co-hosts of the 2015 ODI World Cup along with Australia. That was the last ICC event to be played in that country. The country regularly hosts U-19 ICC events. 

5) Pakistan – 16

International cricket is finally back in Pakistan after a long gap of more than a decade. 2022 saw three countries tour Pakistan after a long gap. Australia, England and very recently New Zealand made a trip to the country in November-December 2022. The country and its people love international cricket very much and it is one of the most difficult countries to tour. 

6) West Indies – 16

The Caribbean country has 16 venues that has hosted men’s ODI cricket. The standard of cricket in the country has deteriorated over time with popular cricketers retiring from the game and the T20 specialists choosing freelance T20 cricket over national commitments. The country last hosted the T20 World Cup in 2010 which was its last major event in senior cricket. 

7) South Africa -15

The Protean nation has 15 grounds that hosted men’s ODI cricket. It last hosted the 2003 ODI World Cup in senior cricket and hosted several U-19 and women’s ICC events. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Centurion are venues that hosts international cricket regularly in the country.

8) Sri Lanka – 12

12 venues in Sri Lanka have hosted men’s ODI cricket in Sri Lanka. The country hosted the 2012 edition of the T20 World Cup which was the last major event played in senior cricket in the country. Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Hambantota hosts international cricket regularly in Sri Lanka. 

9) Bangladesh – 9

Bangladesh first played international cricket in 2000 after being awarded the Test status. Since then international cricket has improved by leaps and bounds in the country. As many as nine venues have hosted men’s ODI cricket in the country. The advent of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) helped revive the status of cricket in the country. Bangladesh were the co-hosts of the 2011 and hosted the 2014 T20 World Cup entirely.

10) Kenya – 7

The country is no longer hosting international cricket. However, till the 2007 World Cup, The country played in almost every major ICC event. They also made it the quarter-finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup. The Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi is one of the historic venues in the country. 

11) Netherlands – 6

Netherlands has as many as six grounds that has hosted men’s ODI matches in the country. Teams like South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa have toured the country in the recent past. VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen, Sportpark Westvliet in Voorburg, The Hague are some of the best grounds in the country.

12) Zimbabwe- 4

Zimbabwe were once considered dark horse in ICC events in the early and late 90s. However, with time international cricket started deteriorating in the country and the standard came down as well. Recently India travelled to Zimbabwe in 2021. The Harare Sports Club in Hahare and the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo regularly hosts international cricket in the country. 

13) Ireland – 4

Ireland is an associate nation but they certainly play a lot better cricket than the tag of an associate nation. India recently toured Ireland in 2022 and played a three-match T20I series. They regularly participate in ICC events and several of their players play across different T20 leagues across the world. Recently Josh Little was bought by Gujarat Titans for IPL 2023 for 4.4 crores. 

14) Scotland – 4

Four international venues have hosted international men’s ODI Cricket in the country. The four venues are namely are Grange Cricket Club Ground in Edinburgh, Lochside Park in Forfar, Langloan in Coatbridge and Mannofield Park in Aberdeen. Scotland created a few upsets in the T20 World Cup last year. 

15) UAE – 4

The United Arab Emirates has four venues where men’s international ODI cricket has been played. Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman has seen plenty of men’s cricket in recent times. UAE is the hub of franchise and domestic T20 cricket leagues given their batting-friendly pitches in the country. IPL 2020 and 2021 hosted in the country was the turning point in the country becoming the focal point of T20 cricket leagues across the globe.
