Ruturaj Gaikwad, a white-ball opening potential for India, has been excluded from the three-match T20I series against New Zealand due to a wrist injury.

The 25-year-old has registered at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to receive treatment for his injuries.

The last time Gaikwad played was when Maharashtra faced Hyderabad in a Ranji Trophy match. In that game, he recorded a score of 8 to 0, and afterwards, he informed the BCCI about his wrist ailment. Actually, this is the second time Gaikwad has experienced wrist pain.

Due to a similar injury, he missed the T20I match against Sri Lanka. After testing positive for Covid last year, he also missed the home ODI matches against the West Indies.

It is clear that Gaikwad’s frequent absences from work due to illness or injuries have angered the national team’s decision-makers and brain trust. However, they won’t look for a replacement for this series, which increases the likelihood that Prithvi Shaw would return and take part.

Ruturaj Gaikwad also missed last year’s T20 series against Sri Lanka due to a wrist injury:

Ruturaj also missed last year’s T20 series against Sri Lanka due to a wrist injury. This time, he was left out of India’s playing XI against Sri Lanka, as Shubman Gill opened with Ishan Kishan.

“Yes, Ruturaj is in NCA with a wrist injury. we don’t know yet whether it is serious. But considering the short turnout time for the matches, it is unlikely that he will be able to make it in time. He is undergoing scans and we will know more once reports come in. We already have 4-5 openers available. But it is up to the selectors to name a replacement,” a senior BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport.

Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, in addition to Ruturaj Gaikwad, are also out of the T20 series due to injuries. Iyer is being treated at the NCA for a back injury right now. Sanju Samson is receiving physical therapy after a knee injury in Kochi.
