India’s depth allowed them to scarcely notice the unavailability of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul in their just-finished ODI series against New Zealand. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who took their places, weren’t precisely the series’ best performers, but Rohit Sharma’s men continuously scored a lot of runs throughout the series because of opener Shubman Gill and other top-order batsmen’s brilliant play.

The squad wants to give as many players as possible the chance to shine, according to captain Rohit Sharma, who himself got his maiden ODI century in more than three years in the third game.

If We Can Find Space For Rajat Patidar, We Will Get Him To Play: Rohit Sharma

Rajat Patidar was one player who struggled to make an appearance during the series, despite some fans’ expectations that he would take the field since India had already won the series by that point. According to Rohit, the squad is choosing players for games in accordance with the strategies they have created in the lead-up to the World Cup later this year.

“If we can find space for him we will get him to play,” said Rohit about Patidar. “Right now there is Kohli at No.3, Ishan Kishan at No.4 – he had sat out the last series after scoring a double century. At No.5 is Suryakumar Yadav, the whole world knows what he has been doing and then at No.6 there is Hardik Pandya. We want everyone to play but we cannot do that unless we find space for them.”

Everyone Will Get A Chance: Rohit Sharma

At the Holkar Stadium in Indore, where Patidar happens to play his home matches for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket, the third ODI was held.

“I know maybe we could have played him in Indore. In Ranchi, Ishan will also say, let me play, I am from Ranchi. But that is not how it works, we go according to some plans. Everyone will get a chance. That is what we have told the boys, we will give you a chance to play whenever we can but that opportunity should arise, there are a lot of boys waiting in line,” said Rohit.

Before playing Australia for a highly anticipated four-match Test series, India will now play New Zealand in a three-match T20I series. The first game in the series versus New Zealand is on Friday in Ranchi, while the second one is on Sunday in Lucknow. On Wednesday in Ahmedabad, the series will come to an end.
