The vivacious wicketkeeper, brilliant batter, and calm captain- these are some of the qualities we can associate with Sanju Samson. He is one Indian player who has lost his place in Team India multiple times but never vanished from the limelight.
Sanju Samson is a right-handed batsman and a member of white-ball formats for India. However, he has missed selections in key international tournaments due to poor form and narrow competition. Samson is also a wicketkeeper and has donned the role for India in some games.
Early Life and Career
Sanju Samson was born in Pulluvila town in Trivandrum City in Kerala on November 11, 1994. His father Samson Viswanath was a Delhi police officer while his mother was a housewife. He has an elder brother Saily Samson- his only sibling.
Since his father was in Delhi Police, Sanju Samson was brought up in Delhi and practiced under childhood coach Yashpal. His father retired from Delhi Police later and the family shifted to Kerela, where he continued his cricket career.
Samson got a place in the Kerala state team at the U-16 and U-19 levels. His first big break was playing for the India Under-19 team in the U-19 Asia Cup 2012. Later, he slammed a marvelous ton in the U-19 Asia Cup 2013 in UAE against Pakistan.
International Career
Sanju Samson made his international debut in July 2015 during a T20I series against Zimbabwe. However, he lost his place in the side later due to his inconsistent performances. However, he continued to impress in the IPL and domestic circuit.
However, Samson is yet to cross 50 games in both limited-overs formats. Due to stiff competition in the wicketkeeper's category, Samson is not the first-choice keeper for India. However, he has been brilliant whenever he has opportunities in recent years. Notably, Samson has not played in any crucial ICC tournaments for Team India.
IPL Career
Samson has been a consistent performer in the Indian Premier League. Right from his first season in 2013 for Rajasthan Royals, Samson has grabbed the limelight with his amazing batting show.
The right-handed batsman has represented Rajasthan Royals for a long time since the debut 2013 season. He played two seasons for Delhi Capitals (2016 and 2017), however, was captured by Rajasthan Royals once again in the 2018 mega auction.
Now, Samson is the skipper of the Rajasthan Royals and also led the side to the final in the 2022 season. With more than 150 games in IPL, Samson is a highly experienced batter and skipper. The wicketkeeper-batsman has more than 4000 runs in his kitty including three thrilling tons.
In recent years, Sanju Samson has gained wide popularity as a wicketkeeper-batsman. He has been a consistent performer in the IPL as well as the Indian team and is en route to a glorious career.
