Karachi Kings batter Kieron Pollard had his bat broken in the PSL 2024 match against Lahore Qalandars. The Kings managed to chase down 178 without Pollard contributing substantially to the total.
Kieron Pollard was dismissed for just three in the chase. However, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik kept a cool head and scored an unbeaten top ace in the chase for the Kings. The win keeps them alive in the tournament as they seek to make it to the top four. Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi have made it to the playoffs while the Qalandars were eliminated after their latest defeat to the Kings.
Tim Seifert (36) and James Vince (42) added a 59-run stand to give the Karachi Kings a good start in the chase. Skipper Shan Masood played a good hand of 24. However, it was Shoaib Malik (27*) and Irfan Khan’s (35 off 16) 52-run stand that sealed the deal for the Kings.
In between the tense chase, Kieron Pollard’s bat-breaking moment had everyone in splits. The incident happened in the 13th over of the Karachi innings. He tried to carve one through covers only managing to break his bat. There was enough pace from Tayyab Abbas that took him by surprise. Eventually, the pacer dismissed him for just three in the final ball of the 13th over.

Earlier in the game, Karachi Kings won the toss and opted to bowl first. Fakhar Zaman (55) and Abdullah Shafique (54) struck fifties to take their team to a good total of 177/5 in their 20 overs. Sikandar Raza (22*) and David Wiese (24*) also played cameos in the end to contribute to the total.
However, in the end, Karachi Kings won the game off the final ball of the 20th over. Malik’s experience came in handy as he took his team over the line and eliminated the Qalandars in the process. The Kings are placed fifth on the table with 8 points and have a negative NRR of -0.200. Quetta Gladiators on nine points also have an NRR in the negative (-0.635).
Quertta have two games remaining as opposed to just one for Karachi. All the matches are must-win games for the two bottom-ranked teams after the ouster of Lahore Qalandars.
“To be honest, we did speak out during the meetings. I told them during the meetings when match goes into crunch situations, don’t panic. I remembered my own words. It wasn’t easy. After playing for so many years, you just need to calm yourself,” said Shoaib Malik after he won the game for The Karachi Kings with the chase getting trickier in the end with the Kings needing 8 off the final over.
Karachi Kings skipper Shan Masood praised his players after they took them to a crucial victory. He also emphasized on the importance of winning the last game to stay alive in the tournament. The Kings play their last game against Peshawar Zalmi on March 11.
“The bowlers did well. Anwar did well. Fielding was good. Through the middle, we conceded a lot of runs between 10-14. Initially we thought we had given away 15 runs more. But a big powerplay thanks to Seifert and Vince helped us. When it was reversing, Irfan and Malik batted well. I was more inclined to bat first. Wherever the team requires me to play, I will do it. Hopefully, a couple of results go our way and we can qualify” said Masood.
