After the conclusion of the third T20I between India and South Africa in Indore, the India National Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid revealed the real reason behind sending veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik to bat ahead of man-in-red-hot-form Suryakumar Yadav in the dead rubber encounter.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who got the opportunity to play only one ball in the Asia Cup 2022, was promoted in the batting order in the third T20I against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa National Cricket Team at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Tuesday, October 4.

After India lost two quick wickets, veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who was promoted to No.4, and young wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had a 41-run partnership in 20 balls. Karthik got dismissed in the 7th over after scoring brilliant 46 runs off 21 balls, including 4 fours and 4 sixes.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, head coach Dravid said that they wanted to give Karthik an opportunity to spend some time out in the middle. He elaborated:

“I think today was an opportunity to give these guys some batting. It is tough on guys like Dinesh and Rishabh who don’t get too many hits in the middle. I felt they were batting really well at one moment, had they played longer we might have got closer.

“I feel batting at 6, it’s always tough when you have to bat just 5-10 balls, so it’s always nice to get a few balls under their belt like they did today. I feel the way Harshal and the rest of the lower order batted was also really good.”

India National Cricket Team head Dravid also talked about the attacking approach of the team with the bat and said:

“We’ve made a decision after the last T20 WC where we sat down as a group and decided to play more positively. We believe we have the quality as a group to play more aggressively, we’ve been able to do that without being bowled out too often.”

India National Cricket Team lost by 49 runs against South Africa National Cricket Team in the third T20I encounter. However, India took the trophy home by winning the series 2-1.
