Guwahati plays host to the second India vs South Africa T20I on Sunday, October 2. The first game was a low-scoring encounter with India winning the game by 8 wickets. The Proteas now find themselves in a must-win situation to keep the series alive. Both teams are placed in the same group in the T20 World Cup and thus series is crucial for both teams.
After five wickets fell inside the powerplay, South Africa could only muster 106. Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar shared the five wickets as they gave a brilliant display of swing bowling. Temba Bavuma, the South African skipper said that his batters did not apply themselves well inside the powerplay for which they lost the game.
“As a batting unit we failed to apply ourselves in those conditions. We didn’t expect the pitch to play this way. Yes we expected it to be spicy but normally you will be able to hit through the line in this part of the world. Seamers needed runs behind then to defend. They tried their best and supported by spinners as well. I thought we fought well late with the bat. That’s a positive” said Bavuma.
Players from both teams also accepted that the pitch was a tough one for the batters and not an ideal one for T20 cricket. KL Rahul in the post-match interaction said that this was one of the toughest pitches that he batted on.
Definitely, right up there (as the toughest pitch). We have played in some difficult conditions like this but I haven’t got runs, so this was hard work. It was unbelievable for Surya to come out there and play those shots, we have seen how balls were flying, nipping around, two-paced and everything that can be hard for a batter that was the wicket today” said Rahul.
