Former Indian speedster Ajit Agarkar has opined that the Test series against England last year, where Rohit Sharma had scored good runs will help him as Test captain in the upcoming series.

Virat Kohli had stepped down as India’s Test captain following the Test series defeat in South Africa and Rohit Sharma was recently appointed as new Test captain ahead of the two-match series against Sri Lanka, which will be Rohit’s first assignment as Test captain.

The first Test match of the series will be played from March 4 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh which will be Virat Kohli’s 100th Test and the second Test will be played from March 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Agarkar believes that leading India National Cricket Team in Test cricket will be a huge honour for senior opening batsman Rohit Sharma.

“Firstly, it will be a huge honour for him. Yeah, he has led India for a few games in white-ball cricket, not just as full-time captain but before as well,” Agarkar told Star Sports.

Former Indian pacer said that the batting performance of Rohit will give him a lot of faith and he also has a plethora of captaincy experience.

“The one thing that will do him good is the series that he had in England. The batting would have given him a lot of faith. As a leader, you want to be one of the better players in the team so that you can demand things from other people. Plus, he has got the necessary experience in terms of captaincy.”

He added that red-ball cricket is different from white-ball cricket but Rohit will be starting his tenure as full-time captain in India and he has got a strong squad so there will be no problems for him.

Test cricket will be a bit different but at least he is starting in India where the conditions are familiar. It’s a very strong squad that India has, I don’t think it will be a problem for him,” Agarkar added.
