KL Rahul has been out of sorts for some time. The Indian batsman has scored a few half-centuries since rejoining the team after groin surgery, but he hasn’t looked entirely compelling and, more significantly, hasn’t performed well in crucial matches.

In the ODIs against Bangladesh, Rahul, who for a long time was considered India’s opening alternative, batted at No. 4, possibly indicating that the team management no longer considers him a top-order candidate for the starting XI. In the first One Day International against Bangladesh, Rahul struck a half-century, but it was in vain. Moreover, it would be crucial to determine whether Rahul is still a fit whenever Suryakumar Yadav returns.

KL Rahul Will Have To Fight For A Place In The Playing XI: Sanjay Bangar

KL Rahul’s inclusion in India’s Playing XI for the World Cup is uncertain given the level of competitiveness for the opening position, according to former batting coach Sanjay Bangar.

The former Indian all-rounder believes that Rahul’s prospects will be limited by Ishan Kishan’s recent double-century against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Apart from Ishan, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill are other contenders. Rahul won’t have it easy getting into the Indian Playing XI when the World Cup visits India later this year, according to Bangar, with so many exciting young players on his tail.

“Taking into account the kind of success that Ishan Kishan has had at the top of the order which means KL Rahul will have to fight for a place in the playing XI, and hence I feel that KL Rahul may not be part of the playing XI in 50-over cricket at the moment,” Bangar said on ESPNCricinfo.

Hardik Pandya Strong Contender To Take Over From Rohit Sharma

Rahul was one of up to seven players who captained the Indian team in 2022, and Bangar thinks that now that Hardik Pandya is officially in charge of the T20I squad in Rohit Sharma’s absence, Rahul has fallen down the pecking order, making it even harder for him to compete for a berth in the team.

Additionally, India remain unbeaten under Pandya, which is why Bangar has supported him to follow Rohit as the next ODI and T20I captain, easily eclipsing Rahul, who was excluded from the Sri Lanka series.

“Hardik Pandya’s career graph as far as his captaincy is concerned is pretty good because the way he led his team to the IPL championship was fabulous. So, it meant in the longer run he is going to be a strong contender to take over the reins from Rohit Sharma whenever the situation arises,” added the former India batting coach.
