Gautam Gambhir made quite a shocking comment ahead of the IND vs SL 2nd ODI. The former India opener called Rohit Sharma a better player than Ricky Ponting. Gautam Gambhir also revealed the reason why he feels Rohit Sharma has an upper hand over the former Australian skipper.

Ricky Ponting is a former Australian player who holds the record of winning two ICC ODI World Cup titles under his leadership in 2003 and 2007. Moreover, Ricky Ponting is also the 3rd highest run-getter in international cricket with 27483 runs.

Gautam Gambhir Believes Rohit Sharma is Player Than Ricky Ponting

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of IND vs SL 2nd ODI, Gautam Gambhir had a discussion with co-panelist Sanjay Manjerekar. Rohit Sharma, who accounts for 29 ODI hundreds, needs one more century to equal Ricky Ponting’s record of 30 ODI centuries.

Hence, while talking about the record, Gambhir termed Rohit Sharma as a better batsman than Ponting. According to Gambhir, the Indian skipper has a better record while playing in the subcontinent than Ponting.

“The surprising fact is that in the last four or five years he has gotten this many hundreds. Rohit Sharma before the last five-six years was not this consistent. He definitely got about 20 hundreds in the last five-six-seven years. He is a better player than Ricky Ponting because Ricky has got a sh** record in the subcontinent,” Gambhir said.

Although it is hard a make a comparison between Rohit Sharma and Ricky Ponting, Gautam Gambhir is quite right with his stats. Since 2018, Sharma has slammed 20 international centuries. However, he has not hit any century since 2022 in ODIs.

While playing in the subcontinent, Sharma has hit 14 centuries in ODIs. He has hit 15 tons outside the subcontinent. On the other hand, Ricky Ponting has hit only 6 ODI centuries out of his 30 in the subcontinent. His 24 ODI centuries came while playing outside Asia.
