India will start the 2023 season with a white-ball series against Sri Lanka in January 2023, comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the limited-overs squad on Tuesday, December 27. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believes that Ishan Kishan should open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma in ODIs.
Ishan Kishan scored a brilliant double-century of 210 runs off 131 balls with 24 fours and 10 sixes. He completed his 200 runs in just 126 balls and broke Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest double century in world cricket history. The southpaw is the fourth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rohit Sharma to score a double hundred in ODIs.

When asked who should be given an extended run as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner in ODIs, Gautam Gambhir said there should be no debate and it has to be Ishan Kishan, who scored a double century in his last innings.
“It has to be Ishan Kishan, someone who can get a double hundred on that wicket against a reasonably decent attack, especially at home, and that he got 200 by the 35th over, so it has to be Ishan Kishan. You can’t look anything beyond Ishan Kishan; he has to be given a longer run, and he can keep wickets as well. So he can do two jobs for you.”
“So for me, I think that the discussion shouldn’t be there. I think someone else got a double hundred, and I think we would have gone over that certain individual, but that’s not the case with Ishan Kishan because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, I think that this debate is over.”
Kishan is likely to play as a specialist batter against Sri Lanka. KL Rahul was preferred as wicketkeeper in the 50-over format. Rahul kept wickets in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Rishabh Pant’s absence. In 2023, India is scheduled to host the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup, and he has to make his case for the selection.
