“This Is The Sportsmanship” – Twitter Reacts To Rohit Sharma Withdrawing Dasun Shanaka's Run-Out Appeal At Non-striker's End

Many fans on Twitter praised India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma for his decision to withdraw the run-out appeal at the non-striker’s end against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team captain Dasun Shanaka, but on the other hand, many felt that the Indian captain took a wrong decision.
The incident happened on the 4th ball of the final over of the innings during Sri Lanka’s run-chase in the ODI series opener in Guwahati when the Lankan captain was at the non-striker’s end at the score of 98*.

Pacer Mohammed Shami, who was bowling the last over, saw the Sri Lanka captain backing up too far and decided to simply knock the bails off at the non-striker’s end and then appeal for a run-out.
As the on-field umpire went upstairs to check the dismissal, Rohit Sharma quickly intervened and alongside Shami decided to withdraw the run-out appeal.

Rohit’s decision to withdraw the run-out appeal didn’t have any impact on the match as India easily managed to seal a 67-run win, but it helped captain Shanaka register his second century in ODIs.
Shanaka put up a sensational fight and scored a stunning 108* runs off 88 balls, including 12 fours and 3 sixes. Also, he stitched together brilliant 100* runs in 73 balls with Kasun Rajitha, but the target of 374 seemed just overly big to chase down. After the conclusion of the match, Shanaka shook hands with Rohit and appreciated his gesture of withdrawing the appeal.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit said that the Sri Lanka captain batted brilliantly and they didn’t want to run him out at the non-striker’s end.
“I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off, hats off to him, he played really well,” Rohit Sharma said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
Here’s How Twitter Reacted To Rohit Sharma’s Decision To Withdraw Run-Out Appeal:
Not many captains would do this but hats off to @ImRo45 for withdrawing the appeal even though the law says so! Displaying great sportsmanship ? pic.twitter.com/Dm2U3TAoc9

The real winner was the sportsmanship of Rohit Sharma for refusing to take the run out. I doff my cap to you ! https://t.co/KhMV5n50Ob

A withdrawn mankad appeal that also generates "deserved a hundred" discourse. Dreadful.

Great decision by captain Rohit Sharma to withdraw that appeal, Shanaka deserved that century?@ImRo45 @dasunshanaka1

Mohammad Shami Ran out Shanaka on non striker end on 98 and Rohit said he doesn't want to go to third umpire. My captain ???
— ANSHUMAN? (@AvengerReturns) January 10, 2023
Shanaka would have got out on 98 if Rohit wouldn't have taken back the appeal which was unfortunate. Surely he earned the respect here. ❤️
— ANSHUMAN? (@AvengerReturns) January 10, 2023
Good decision from Rohit .That would’ve been really unfair on Shanka. Dasun Shanka looks like really a good player .Great century ?

I hope this gesture by Rohit is not taken in the wrong sense. No it’s not the right thing to do. Not doing it would’ve been in the spirit of the game. This isn’t a gesture to draw inspiration from. The match was dead already, Shanaka prolly wasn’t a serial offender and

I really hope Rohit is asked about that in the presentation. Would love to know his thoughts if it was because Shanaka was on 98 and the game was in the bag, or the team doesn't want to follow this (fear it's the latter though) #INDvSL

Rohit Sharma knew that the run out will have 0 effect on the match !
It would have been unfair to Dasun Shanaka who was batting on 98* to get out this way .
Brilliant gesture by the captain!
Setting the right example @ImRo45

From being a big fan of Mohammad Shami, i would have become his biggest hater, had he asked the umpire for the run out he did to Shanaka when he was on 98 at the non striker end.#INDvSL | #Shami | #DasunShanaka | #INDvsSL | #CricketTwitter

We all wanted Shanaka to get his 100, but #RohitSharma withdrawing appeal for the non-striker's runout puts all future Indians going for it vulnerable to criticism.
BCCI and our Captains should take a stance together, just like ECB and their players do. #Shame #mankad #IndvSL
— Krishna Kumar (@KrishnaFootball) January 10, 2023
Rohit shouldn't have withdrawn the appeal.
