Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided India with an excellent start in the match. They were off to a cautious start, before going berserk against Lahiru Kumara in the 6th over, smashing him for 23. At the end of the first powerplay, the Men In Blue were at 75/0.

The Rohit-Gill duo fell just 5 runs short of a century partnership as they managed to stitch together 95 runs in 92 balls before Rohit Sharma got dismissed in the 16th over, which was bowled by Chamika Karunaratne. The skipper scored a good 42 runs off 49 balls, but he was extremely dejected after his dismissal.

Unlike Rohit Sharma, Gill managed to convert a good start into a big score. The Punjab-born batter played with great intent and completed his half-century off just 52 balls and the century off just 89 balls.

Overall, Shubman Gill smashed a terrific 116 runs off 97 balls, including 14 fours and 2 sixes, before being cleaned up by Kasun Rajitha in the 34th over. He also had a remarkable 131 runs partnership in 110 balls with the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Kohli displayed his class once again and registered his 46th ODI century and overall 74th ton in international cricket. He batted with an excellent strike rate and smashed an outstanding 166* runs off 110 balls, including 13 fours and 8 sixes.

He was involved in two century partnerships – with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who contributed a decent 38 runs with the bat. In the end, India posted a humongous 390/5 on the board in 50 overs.

In the second innings, India’s new-ball king Mohammed Siraj once again provided his side with an amazing start and he decimated the Sri Lankan batting unit.

He dismissed Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Nuwanidu Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga inside the first 10 overs and then produced a brilliant direct hit to dismiss Chamika Karunaratne in the 12th over. Siraj kept bowling good lines and lengths and completed his 10 over-spell, but was unable to grab a 5-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami bagged two wickets and Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets to reduce Sri Lanka to 73/9. After being involved in a scary collision with Jeffrey Vandersay, Ashen Bandara didn’t come out to bat and the visitors faced an embarrassing 317 runs defeat.
