Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist talking about Jos Buttler’s dropped catches in the Ashes 2021-22 second Test at Adelaide Oval said that he can’t have “too much sympathy” because Buttler is an English cricketer.
England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler had a poor performance in the day-night Test against Australia and he went from hero to zero in the space of a few hours. He grabbed an absolutely stunning catch early on in the innings to dismiss Australian opener, Marcus Harris. However, after that, he went on to drop two easy catches of batsman Marnus Labuschagne who utilised every bit of the chance he got and at Stumps, he was batting at 95 not out.

Talking about Buttler’s performance legendary Gilchrist speaking to SEN said:
“He’s such a nice guy, but at the end of the day, he is an English cricketer so you can’t have too much sympathy. I’ve been there, done that.”
Former Australian wicketkeeper lauded Buttler for his catch to dismiss Marcus Harris but was disappointed with his two drop catches of Labuschagne. He said:
“As we all know, he took an absolute screamer earlier on to get rid of Marcus Harris, one of the great wicketkeeping catches. Then spilt a challenging one, but a slightly easier one of Labuschagne when he was on 21. But that one late in the evening, I can only put it down to concentration.”
They Have A Fairly Lazy Style And Technique – Adam Gilchrist Blames English Keeping Style For Buttler’s Dropped Catch
Gilchrist criticised the English wicketkeeping style and said that they have a ” fairly lazy style” which doesn’t suit Australian conditions. He asserted:
“I don’t want to get too technical about the English keeping styles and techniques, but I don’t think they’ve ever really suited Australian conditions, They have a fairly lazy style and technique in compared to what we try and teach our youngsters… about foot movement and trying to access the ball.”
However, Gilchrist also said that Buttler might have lost his concentration as the game progressed and he was “a little bit sleepy”. He stated:
“Whatever his technique was it worked well in that first catch of the day, so I think it’s more just concentration. A long, challenging day. It was pretty slow going cricket. It wasn’t the most entertaining stuff. I am sure there was a few fans in the stands that were asleep so maybe Jos was a little bit sleepy too. He can’t have been fully focused prior to that delivery.”
