Former England skipper Michael Atherton has criticised Joe Root and co. for gifting away chances to Australian batters David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in the Ashes 2021-22 day-night Test at Adelaide Oval.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first in the Adelaide day-night Test and scored 473 runs at the loss of 9 wickets. Batters David Warner and Steve Smith scored over 90 runs but failed to score a century. However, Marnus Labuschagne completed his century after getting dropped by Jos Buttler twice. Also, in England’s first innings Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed were dismissed early on in the innings by pacers Mitchell Starc and Michael Neser.

Writing in his column for The Times, Michael Atherton stated that team England have made “many mistakes” in the two games of the Ashes 2021-22 and labelled the errors by the team as “doubly frustrating”. He stated:

They have made as many mistakes so far as a team would hope to make in an entire series. These errors have been doubly frustrating because England’s bowlers have created opportunities, and Australia’s batting has shown some frailty. Most chances in the field have been gifted to David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, whose run-scoring so far has underpinned strong first-innings totals.”

Former England captain Michael Atherton pinpointed that the selection of the team and the fielding has been poor by England and despite planning the tour for two years they ” cannot master the basics”. He asserted:

Selections in both Tests, the toss at the Gabba, half a dozen or so dropped catches, a run-out or two spurned, two wickets with no-balls: England may have been planning this tour in intricate detail for two years, but they cannot master the basics.”
