Australian Test vice-captain Steve Smith who led the team in the second Ashes 2021-22 Test against England in the absence of original captain Pat Cummins had some words of advice for the England red-ball captain Joe Root who has faced a lot of criticism for his captaincy recently.

Australia convincingly defeated Root-led England in the first two games of the Ashes 2021-22, Australia won the first game at the Gabba by 9 wickets and the second game at the Adelaide Oval by 275 runs and now they have a 2-0 lead in the 5-match Test series. The Boxing Day Test is all set to begin on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Cummins is expected to make a comeback in the match.

Meanwhile, Smith said that the “best advice” he could give Root is to trust himself as a skipper. He added that for a leader it’s important to see what else he can do better to help the team.

“There’s always going to be critics out there that critique your performance as a captain. I guess for him (Root), the best advice I could give is just trust yourself, and do everything you can to help your team grow and be as successful as you can be,” cricket.com.au quoted Smith as saying.

“Sometimes as a captain, you get outplayed by the opposition and there’s not a great deal you can do. But just reflecting or seeing what you can do better is always important, that’s part of being a player or a leader,” he added.

Stand-in skipper Smith after the victory over England said that he enjoyed captaining the national team once again. He also lauded Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner for building a strong partnership in the match. He said:

I did enjoy captaincy and the guys played well and controlled the game after the first day. Davey (Warner) and Marnus’s partnership set it up, so we could control the game.”

In the post-match presentation, Smith gave a special mention to the left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc and said that he “led the attack really well”. He asserted:

A special mention to Starc, who has bowled as well as he’s bowled in a long time, and he’s led the attack really well. I think he summed it up quickly that it wasn’t swinging and he was just hitting a good length and attacking the batsmen.”
