Legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has lashed out at England batter Rory Burns for not diving to avoid a run out in the Ashes finale at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Rory Burns was once again included in England’s playing XI after Haseeb Hameed’s continuous failure and the former got out on duck in the comeback innings.

In England’s first innings of the 5th Ashes Test, Burns got run out in the second over itself after some hesitation with opening partner Zak Crawley. Crawley attempted to take a quick single but the fielder Marnus Labuschagne was quicker and he produced a direct hit and Burns got run out. Even though it was a poor call from Crawley but Rory Burns could have saved his wicket if had dived to complete the run.

Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting speaking on Channel 7 said that the Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne would have dived “from two or three yards out from the crease” if he was in place of Burns.

“I want to make a bit of a point of this. There had to be more desperation there from Rory Burns. He’s back into the side, fighting for his Test career, and he’s not willing to put in a big dive to try and save his wicket.”

“I know it’s not his fault, not his call. But you can imagine Marnus Labuschagne in that same situation, he would’ve been diving from two or three yards out from the crease,” he asserted.

Former England cricketer David Gower talking about the run-out said that there was no fault of Burns and it was “ a dreadful call from Zak Crawley”. Speaking on BT Sport, Gower said:

“The big screen delivers the bad news to Rory Burns who, through absolutely no fault of his own, leaves the field runless. It was a dreadful call from Zak Crawley.”

Former England player Steven Finn also criticised Zak Crawley for his poor call.

“That’s a horrible start. You have to feel for Rory Burns, he’s been stuck on the barbecue by Zak Crawley,” Finn told BBC Test Match Special.

Australia despite losing 3 wickets at the score of 12 in the first innings managed to put 303 runs on the board with the help of a sensational century by Travis Head and a half-century by Cameron Green.
