The 2023 World Cup will be played in India and it is a big chance for the Indian team to win another World Cup at home. India last won the World Cup in 2011 under MS Dhoni‘s leadership in India. 12 years down the line, India will again host the 50-over World Cup and are perhaps the strongest contenders to win it at home.
Given the number of captains and different squads they have announced in 2022 alone, the side surely has the depth and the talent to form a strong squad. The comeback of a few senior players who have been rested will make the squad even stronger.
While the 2023 World Cup will be a great opportunity for the young players in the squad, it might be the last opportunity for the senior players to play their last ICC event. There are a few Indian players who might consider retiring from ODIs after the mega event. In this article, we take a look at five Indian players who might retire from ODIs after the 50-over World Cup.
5 Indian Players Who Might Retire From ODIs After The 2023 ODI World Cup
1) Shikhar Dhawan
The southpaw plays only ODIs for India for the last few years. He is still a very dependable ODI player for India and forms a terrific opening pair with both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. With all the senior players rested, Dhawan is currently leading India in the ODI series against West Indies and is fresh off a 97 in the first ODI in Trinidad.

Karthik made a comeback to the Indian T20I side after his fabulous IPL 2022 season. He is now being seen as the first-choice keeper for the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia later this year. He has worked on his finishing skills which were on show in the IPL. As a keeper, he is very safe behind the stumps as well.
However, he is nowhere close to making a comeback to the Indian ODI side. His last ODI for India was the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in which he scored 6.
3) Ravichandran Ashwin
Ashwin is a Test regular but hardly players ODI cricket for India. He last played an ODI for India in 2021 against South Africa. There are chances of him playing the 50-over World Cup if selected. However, with the number of Indian spinners available and much younger than him, he might miss out on the place due to his age. He is 35 and is still India’s first-choice spinner in Test matches.
4) Umesh Yadav
Like Ashwin, Umesh Yadav is also playing just Test cricket for India. He is nowhere close to even being selected in India’s white-ball squads. Away from the Indian team, Yadav is playing his trade in the English county cricket playing for Middlesex. He is playing in the IPL for KKR and is a big part of their bowling attack. His last ODI for India was way back in 2018.
5) Ishant Sharma
Despite all the talent that he had as a young bowler, Ishant Sharma failed to break into India’s 50-over World Cup squad since his debut back in 2007.
India played four World Cups since his debut and the tall and lanky pacer was nowhere close to even being selected in the Indian squad. He is close to retiring now from Test cricket as well having played over 100 Tests for India. He was a part of the 2013 Champions Trophy squad for India.
