IND vs WI: "Don't Think He Will Be Too Successful As An All-Rounder"-Madan Lal On Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer was dropped from the Indian ODI squad after just playing two ODIs in South Africa. He was included in the T20I squad that was announced for the home series against West Indies. Iyer is being seen as a potential replacement for Hardik Pandya, who has not been bowling ever since picking up a back injury. It resulted in him being sidelined from the Indian white-ball squads as well.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Madan Lal is not too convinced about Venkatesh Iyer’s skills as an all-rounder. He further said that he is not too sure that Iyer will be successful as an all-rounder. Talking to Aaj Tak, Lal expressed his views on the 27-year-old.
Venkatesh Iyer hasn’t Worked On His Bowling: Madan Lal
“If batting at No. 5 or 6, I don’t think he will be too successful. I saw his bowling too. Even that wasn’t impressive. I think he can only bowl 2-3 overs at maximum. He hasn’t even worked on his bowling. If you think that he can fit into the team is an all-rounder then it is very difficult to him. The only position you can try him at is the opening position” Madan Lal said.
The return of Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya might see the end of Iyer’s career. He is very much seen as an experimental role as an all-rounder in the absence of both the seasoned cricketers. Iyer played the first two ODIs before getting dropped in the third. In the first ODI, Iyer scored just 2 runs and surprisingly, did not bowl. In the second ODI, he scored 22 and bowled five overs, conceding 28 runs without picking up a wicket.
Before the ODIs, Iyer had even featured in two T20Is against New Zealand, scoring 12* and 20, and picking up 1/12 in Kolkata. He will be opening the batting for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He was retained along with Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Varun Chakravarthy.
