Indian batting all-rounder Deepak Hooda is making his One Day International (ODI) debut in the first match of the three-match ODI series against West Indies on Sunday, February 6 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli, who had recently left India’s leadership group across all three formats, handed over Deepak Hooda his One Day International debut cap.

Batting all-rounder Hooda got his ODI call-up for the West Indies series because India needed someone who had good batting skills and could deliver a few overs, as all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are not fully fit to compete and both have not been included in India’s squad.

Meanwhile, Deepak Hooda had played for teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and scored 785 runs in 80 games at an average of 16.7 and strike rate of 129.5.

Notably, India have become the first team to play 1000 ODI games in the history of cricket. Skipper Rohit Sharma after the toss said it is a historic day for the India National Cricket Team.

“ I am happy to be back, playing for India, good to be back on the field. It’s been a couple of months since I played cricket. It’s a historic day in Indian cricket, been a long journey for India. We have seen a lot of ups and downs.

“As a team, we have grown over the years, and we’ll continue to do that. We had a few positive Covid cases, so we have some new faces. Deepak Hooda is making his ODI debut,” he stated.

Also, India won the toss and opted to bowl first and Mohammed Siraj dismissed West Indies opener Shai Hope in the 3rd over itself.
