Kemar Roach has been recalled as West Indies have announced a 15-member ODI squad for the upcoming series against India. Nkrumah Bonner and Brandon King have also been recalled into the side after a brief layoff from international cricket. Overall, the squad has a good mix of young and experienced players led by the mercurial Kieron Pollard.
Roach who has picked up 124 wickets for West Indies played his last ODI in August 2019. Meanwhile, the top-order batter, Nkrumah Bonner, last played an ODI for West Indies in Bangladesh in January 2021. He has a good List A record scoring 1956 runs in 67 games. King, on the other hand, has been out of the Windies ODI side since the series versus Ireland in 2019-20. He recently played the T20I series against Pakistan and England.
“Kemar Roach is one of our leading fast bowlers and we believe we need bowlers upfront to get early wicket, and Kemar, with an economy rate of five, is certainly good enough to play. Over the last few years, Nkrumah Bonner’s cricket has come on leaps and bounds and we believe he should be given an opportunity to play in the 50-over format,” Lead Selector, Desmond Haynes, said.
“We want to have competition for places. We want to reach a stage where we have a lot of players fighting for positions. We want to broaden the pool of players we have to choose from. The team we have selected is a very good side and we are looking at this tour as part of the preparations for the World Cup in India in 2023,” he added.
The three ODIs will be played in Ahmedabad between February 6-11. This will be followed by a three-match T20I series in Kolkata between February 16-20.
