Indian batter Virat Kohli has become the fastest batter in the history of ODIs to score 5000 runs in matches played at home. He achieved the feat during the first ODI against West Indies.

Kohli lasted all of one over in the ODI but ended up beating the previous record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. While Tendulkar had managed to do it in 121 innings, Kohli broke the barrier in just his 96th innings.

After the duo, Jacques Kallis holds the third spot having taken 130 innings, and Ricky Ponting is in fourth place having achieved the feat in 138 innings. Kohli is the only batter to breach the milestone in under 100 innings.

India defeat West Indies in the first ODI

India’s landmark 1000th ODI was celebrated with a clinical performance. The bowlers were the stars of the show as they managed to restrict the Windies to 176 courtesy of a wonderful spin bowling performance from Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar.

While the latter took three wickets, Chahal ended up with figures of 4/49 to earn the Player of the Match award. In the run chase, Rohit Sharma led the way with a 51-ball 60 studded with ten fours and a maximum.

Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda saw off the chase after a few hiccups along the way. All in all, it was a satisfying performance from the hosts, especially after the series whitewash in South Africa last month.
